Green Garden Mama Part Time Farm Associate
About us:
Green Garden Mama is a small-scale flower farm in north Lombard. We grow on multiple rented backyard spaces, currently totalling approximately .5 acre, and expand every season. We grow following organic and regenerative practices as much as possible, never use herbicides or pesticides, reduce our plastic use as much as possible, and try to respect our local ecology as we farm. We grow a variety of annual crops and have fresh flowers available from early February (indoor forcing program) until mid-October. With the exception of our small indoor forcing program, all our flowers are field grown. We sell mostly wholesale to florists, but do have a small retail program including several CSA options as well as individual bouquet sales.
Location: various backyard spaces in north Lombard, IL
Seasonal part time up to 35 hours/week, starting at $15 per hour

Position overview:
As a farm associate, you will play a hands-on roll in cultivating high-quality flowers and ensuring the success of our suburban flower farm. You will contribute to our mission by combining sustainable farming practices with creative problem-solving and teamwork. Our seasonal employees will assist in bed preparation, planting, maintenance, monitoring soil health, disease and pest management, harvesting, and crop termination. There is a varied daily routine and plenty of movement outdoors. Nearly all of our work environment is in outdoor garden spaces, and there may be uneven or muddy terrain, as well as narrow pathways. Physical dexterity is a must, as there will be a great deal of bending, kneeling, twisting, lifting, and carrying. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, willing to learn new skills, and work quickly and efficiently.
Responsibilities may include:

Moving compost, soil, and mulch

Direct sowing of seeds

Transplanting plugs

Watering, mulching, weeding, pruning

Aiding in installation of drip tape and landscape fabric

Trellising or corralling plants

Harvesting flowers
-
Washing buckets
-
Maintaining a safe and organized workspace

Heavy lifting (50 pounds) may be required, must be able to shovel and move a full wheelbarrow

Hours/Seasons
Part to full-time seasonal hours from April through November, paid hourly as an independent contractor.
Hours needed immediately are Monday and Tuesday between 7am-3pm, but additional hours are available Wed-Fri, and daily hours will vary throughout the season. Weekly hours may vary from 15-30 hours, and can be somewhat flexible.

Weeding Specialist

Position overview:
As a Weeding Specialist, you will be responsible for helping to keep multiple farm locations free of weeds. Hand pulling and manual cultivation are prioritized, as we prefer to avoid herbicide use as much as possible. This position has a flexible schedule.
Responsibilities may include:

Identifying and removing weeds at multiple locations

Moving discarded plant matter to compost pile or street side disposal

Maintaining a safe and organized workspace
Hours/Seasons
Part to full-time seasonal hours from late April through mid-October, paid hourly as an independent contractor, starting at $15 per hour.
Hours available are at your discretion if approved by Carrie. Daylight hours only, up to 15 hours per week. Required hours weekly may change throughout the season.

Delivery Driver
Qualifications:

Must provide own vehicle able to comfortably hold up to ten 5 gallon buckets
Position overview:
Delivery drivers are needed only occasionally, to deliver anywhere from Batavia to Joliet to downtown Chicago. Hours/locations are inconsistent and minimal. Deliveries are offered Tuesday through Friday from 10am-4pm, but not required every week. This is an “as-needed” seasonal position February-October, at a rate of $20 per hour. Most deliveries are direct to wholesale clients, but occasional retail deliveries may also be available.
